What's in your wallet?

In the process of adjusting to a new country, an immigrant may need to enlist professional help in order to get settled. Here are some professional services that are worth thinking about:

Primary Care Doctor
Every family needs a doctor. It is important to shop for one before you ever need one. I suggest that a family try and find a doctor within the first year of their move. You can find a physician through your medical insurance company. WebMD also has a list of physicians in your area. It is important to look at their credentials before your first visit. Come up with a list of three, schedule a consultation visit with all three. Click here for some questions to ask each doctor. After the three visits, determine the following:

  1. Did you feel comfortable with the doctor?
  2. Did they fully answer your questions?
  3. Did they spend enough time listening to you and addressing your needs?
  4. Will the person meet the needs of your family even in years to come?

It will take time to build a relationship with a doctor but it is important that you feel comfortable from the onset and trust that you and your family will be well cared for. When everything else is equal, trust your instinct when deciding on a family physician.

Attorney
Most people call an attorney only when they are in trouble. Where in most cases that is true, it is important to find an attorney that you feel comfortable consulting with on various matters. Some of the important issues that may arise are:
  1. Drawing up a will. This is important even if you have not yet accumulated a large amount of assets. It addresses financial matters and healthcare matters in the unfortunate event that something happens to you or your family members. Click here to read a great article on why you need a will.
  2. Setting up a business
  3. Real Estate transactions
  4. Family immigration
You can find a lawyer by going to www.lawyers.com. Another great way of finding a lawyer is getting a referral from friends. It helps to have a lawyer's number in the case that you run into legal trouble and need help fast. Most cities have an association of lawyers that offers free legal help from time to time. In Houston, there is a legal helpline. The next one is on Wednesday, February 16 from 5-9pm. The number to call is 713-759-1133. Do a google search to find a help line in your area. It may also help to tune in to legal shows on radio from time to time. It helps you learn how things work in your new home.
