SA Fashion week is coming up next month but sadly I will not be going unless my fairy godmother shows up with plane tickets.
It is very inspiring to see how the fashion industry has blossomed in Africa. The growth signifies several things, but I think one of the most important is that it shows there is a market for creative pursuits and people are having successful careers in the field.
Most countries in Africa have seen their economies grow to the point that increasingly people have more disposable income that they can spend on things like fashion and art.
And that's a good thing for the creatives because we all can't be doctors and engineers and lawyers and all those "prestigious" careers that many of our African parents push as towards.

Not Your Mother's Kitenge!
Wow! Who knew that such stunning designs could be made from Kitenge fabric? Both the fabric and the dress are made by Vlisco, a Dutch company that produces 4 fabric and fashion collections every year.Vlisco's clothes are designed to inspire creativity and individuality as the company recognizes that most African women have a personal tailor. The beautiful fabrics are available for sale on their website www.vlisco.com.
I haven't had clothes tailored since I moved to the US as it is really hard to find a good tailor. But if you are lucky to have one, you can use these traditional fabrics in a contemporary way to create the perfect blend of African & Western style. For more eye candy and inspiration, check out their fabulous Ad Campaign.
